Spring Into Torah - 2019 - Beth El Congregation Syllabus

Class One: Brit

Overview of the Torah: its basic narratives, personalities, and themes. Exploration of the concept of brit (covenant) as a basic motif of the Torah and foundation of prayer.

Class Two: Nevi’im

Overview of the Hebrew Bible and the ancient history (Conquest of Canaan to Babylonian Exile) of the Jewish People. Discussion of the ways that the Bible is used in Jewish liturgical life. Examination of selected texts and concepts from Nevi’im - with particular attention to Haftarot.

Class Three: Ketuvim

Overview of the Hebrew Bible and the ancient history (Conquest of Canaan to Babylonian Exile) of the Jewish People. Discussion of the ways that the Bible is used in Jewish liturgical life. Examination of selected texts and concepts from Ketuvim - with particular attention to Ketuvim used in Jewish liturgical calendar.

History of Trop and Different Trops

Class Five:

Pilgrimage Holy Days: The Torah Wheel of the Jewish Year Overview of the Torah readings and themes of the Shalosh Regalim

Class Six:

Holy Days: The Torah Wheel of the Jewish Year
Overview of the Torah readings and themes of Hanukkah, Purim, and Tisha b’Av. Emphasis on the ways that the Jewish calendar conveys Judaism’s core teachings and values.

Class Seven and Eight:

When Do I Bow? And Other Questions About Jewish Prayer
Exploration of the mechanics and meaning behind Jewish prayer. Focus on the general rubrics of the prayer service, keva/kavanna, ritual garb and symbols, and comfort in the synagogue environment. Growing familiarity with prayers and service structure.

Class Nine:

Shabbat Time in Sounds
Focus on Shabbat nusach, as well as the prayers said particularly for Shabbat.

Class Ten:

A Time For Joy and a Time to Mourn: Weekday Minyan and Shiva Minyans Overview of prayer during mourning. The mode of regular weekday prayer.
