BETH EL WELCOMES DEAN MARTIN BELSKY, DEAN OF UNIVERSITY OF AKRON SCHOOL OF LAW

For the opening program of its Jewish and Public Affairs Forum series, Beth El is honored to have as guest speaker Martin H. Belsky, who joined The University of Akron
School of Law in January 2008 as Dean and Randolph Baxter Professor of Law.
Dean Belsky will discuss the topic “The Legal Consequences of Being Jewish in a non-Jewish World.”
The evening will begin with a Shabbat Dinner at 6:15 p.m., followed by Shabbat evening services at 7:30 p.m. Dean Belsky will speak after services. The congregation is then invited to a complimentary Oneg Shabbat sponsored by Beth El Sisterhood.
Reservations for the Shabbat dinner must be prepaid by Monday, November 24th.
Martin Belsky began his legal career in 1969 as a prosecutor and then as chief prosecutor in Philadelphia.
Beginning in 1975 he served both as counsel to the Judiciary Committee of the House of Representatives and as chief counsel to the Special House Committee on the Outer Continental Shelf (offshore drilling). From 1979 to 1983 he served first as deputy general counsel and then assistant administrator of the Federal
National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.
Dean Belsky’s academic career began in 1982 as associate professor of law and director of the multi-disciplinary Center for Governmental Responsibility at the University of Florida. He then became professor, dean and president at Albany Law School from 1986 to 1995, after which he served as professor and
dean at the University of Tulsa’s College of Law until 2007.
In all the cities in which he has resided, Dean Belsky has been an active member of the community. He has also been a board member and committee chair of many government advisory councils and civic and charitable organizations and has chaired and served on many commissions, including those
on energy, privacy, legal services, ethics,, ethnic and religious understanding, higher education, gerontology and aging, disabilities, fire services, criminal justice, and science and the law.
As a noted speaker and scholar, Dean Belsky has been involved with numerous conferences on a wide variety of topics. His recent writings and books have focused on the Supreme Court and on law and religion.
Martin Belsky received a B.A. (cum laude) from the College of Liberal Arts at Temple University; a J.D. (cum laude) from Columbia University School of Law; and graduate diplomas from the Hague Academy of International Law and Cambridge University.
Dean Belsky is married to Professor Kathleen Waits, a professor at the University of Tulsa Law School. They have two children: Allen Frederick Belsky and Marcia Elizabeth Belsky.
